IC 1006 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S in the constellation Bear Guardian in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 232 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across.
The galaxies NGC 5581 and NGC 5610 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Truman Henry Safford on May 14, 1866 .
