IC 996 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 144 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5526 and IC 995 , among others .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on July 3, 1888 .
