IC 983 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (r) bc in the constellation Bear Keeper in the northern sky . It is an estimated 244 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with IC 982 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 117 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies close to spiral galaxies and disturbing them (Arp catalog) .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on May 27, 1891 .
