IC 971 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is around 146 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 100,000 light years . It probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with IC 4358 .
The galaxies NGC 5442 , IC 4361 , IC 4364 , IC 4368 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on May 20, 1868 by Truman Henry Safford .
