IC 978 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is around 71 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 15,000 light years .
The galaxies IC 977 and IC 985 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on July 8, 1893 by Stéphane Javelle .
