IC 1001 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type scd? in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 366 million light years from the Milky Way and is classified as a radio galaxy .
The galaxies NGC 5551 , NGC 5575 , IC 1002 , IC 1003 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on June 29, 1892 by the French astronomer Stéphane Javelle .
