In 2019 the Davis Cup was held for the 108th time. The home team of the final tournament in Madrid , Spain won the Davis Cup for the sixth time. In the final, the Spanish team defeated their opponent Canada , whose team was in the final of the competition for the first time, 2-0.
The mode of the tournament has changed significantly in the world group. Previously, a knockout round was played with 16 teams and the eight losers in the first round had to play a relegation against the winners of the highest continental groups.
In 2019, a qualifying round took place on February 1 and 2, in which 24 teams played in direct matches for twelve free starting places for the final, which will take place from November 18 to 24. The teams in the qualifying round were made up as follows: the four defeated quarter-finalists of the previous year and the eight winners of last year's play-offs . The remaining twelve teams qualified via their ITF ranking, whereby a different number of quota places was allocated per zone: the six best teams from the Europe / Africa zone were just as qualified as the three best teams from the American zone or the Oceania / Asia zone. The setting for the draw for the qualification matches was based on the ITF ranking. The losers in the qualifying round continue to play in continental groups I.
The four semi-finalists from the previous year were qualified without taking part in the qualifying round: Croatia , France , Spain and the United States . Argentina and Great Britain received a wildcard from the ITF . Together with the twelve winners from the qualification, the field of participants in the final comprised 18 teams. These played in a preliminary round in six groups of three teams, the group winners and the two best runners-up in the group made it to the quarter-finals.
In the final round, only two singles and a final double were played per match. The latter was omitted from the quarter-finals, when it was already 2-0. Another new feature was that the tournament was played on two sets of wins.
