The Davis Cup 1981 was the 70th edition of the competition for men's national tennis teams organized by the ITF . For the first time this year, a graded system was used in the Davis Cup , in which a world group with 16 teams was created. This was made up of the teams that had reached the semi-finals of their respective continental zones in the previous year. The eight teams that lost in the first round of the world group now played a relegation for relegation from the world group. The four losers went down to the continental zones, the winners of the respective zones took their positions in the following year.
The US team won the final in Cincinnati between December 11 and 13 against Argentina 3-1. The USA defended their title from the previous year. For Argentina it was the first Davis Cup final.
The relegation games to the world group were played from October 2nd to 4th. The winners played in the world group again in the 1982 season , the losers relegated to the continental zones.
