José Luis Clerc  (born August 16,   1958  in Buenos Aires  ) is a retired Argentine   tennis player  .
Career  
As a right-hander, Clerc moved to the professional camp in 1977 and won 27 ATP  titles. In 1988 he retired as an active player. His best place in the world rankings was fourth on August 3, 1981. He then had a run and achieved 27 wins and four titles in one month. In the world rankings he was eighth at the end of 1980, fifth in 1981, sixth in 1982 and eighth in 1983.
Between 1976 and 1989 Clerc represented Argentina  in the Davis Cup  , sometimes together with his teammate Guillermo Vilas  . In 1981  in the final against the USA (final score 1: 3) he defeated Roscoe Tanner  , but lost the second single against John McEnroe  after he had already lost the double with Vilas against Peter Fleming  and McEnroe.
Together with Vilas and Carlos Gattiker  , he won the Nations Cup  in Düsseldorf with Argentina in 1980 , in the final the team beat Italy 3-0. 
Clerc runs a tennis school in Argentina, competes in senior tournaments, and works as a television commentator.
