Roscoe Tanner (born October 15, 1951 in Chattanooga ) is a retired American tennis player .

His greatest success as a tennis player was winning the Australian Open in 1977 . As a serve and volley player , the grass courts suited him, and so he made it to the 1979 final of Wimbledon , in which he brought Björn Borg to the brink of defeat.

He won a total of 16 tennis tournaments and in 1981 with the American team the Davis Cup . In 1984 he resigned from tennis. Like some previous tennis pros, he was unable to cope with life after his career ended and he had ongoing financial problems. In 2003, he was sentenced to 10 years probation by a Florida court for committed check fraud. He was also on trial for serious theft and forgery of documents. He had also failed to meet his maintenance obligation towards his daughter. In 2006 he was sentenced to two years in prison for violating probation requirements.
