Ilie Năstase ( pronunciation ? / I ; born July 19, 1946 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian tennis player , politician and sports official . Audio file / audio sample

Năstase was one of the top ten players in the 1970s. In 1972 and 1973 he led the tennis world rankings for a total of 40 weeks .

He won a total of 64 individual titles, including the titles at the 1972 US Open and the 1973 French Open . He won the Grand Slam title in doubles in 1973 at Wimbledon , 1970 at the French Open and 1975 at the US Open. He lost his two singles finals at Wimbledon in 1972 to Stan Smith and in 1976 to Bjorn Borg . He also won the Masters four times (1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975). This makes him the most successful Romanian tennis player.

Năstase went into politics in the 1990s and ran for the Partidul Social Democrat for the office of mayor of Bucharest . After his failed candidacy, he withdrew from politics.

In May 1997 he was elected President of the Romanian Tennis Federation, in 2001 and 2005 he was confirmed in this office. During his tenure he tried to set up a tennis academy in Bucharest. After a court ruling against him and allegations of wasting association funds, he resigned on February 12, 2008.

2006 Nastase was in the movie Windows on Monday by Ulrich Köhler seen as an actor.

In April 2017 he stood out as the captain of the Romanian women's team on the sidelines of the Fed Cup encounter between Romania and Great Britain through racist and insulting remarks, which led to the world association suspending him until further notice. Because he u. a. insulted the English players as "fucking bitches", he has since been considered an undesirable person at the tournament in Wimbledon . He is denied access to the VIP stands.
