Ulrich Köhler (director)

Ulrich Köhler (born December 15, 1969 in Marburg ) is a German film director from the Berlin School .

Life

When Köhler was five years old, his parents moved to Africa. He grew up in Zaire until he was nine years old , where his parents worked as development workers. The move to a small town in Hesse was a tough turning point for him and his siblings. From 1989 to 1991 he studied art in Quimper , France , then philosophy and visual communication at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . After studying, which he finished in 1998, he made short films. In 2002 the feature film Bungalow was shown in the Panorama of the Berlin International Film Festival . In 2005 he made the feature film Monday come the windows . In 2011 he was awarded the prize for best director ( Silver Bear ) at the Berlin International Film Festival for the feature film Sleeping Sickness .

Köhler lives with the director Maren Ade in Berlin, the couple have two children.
