Yevgeny Kafelnikov (right) with Russian President
Vladimir Putin , 2000
Evgeni Alexandrowitsch Kafelnikov ( Russian Евгений Александрович Кафельников , scientific transliteration Evgenij Alexandrovič Kafel'nikov ; born February 18, 1974 in Sochi , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian tennis player and hobby poker player .
Career
Kafelnikov graduated from the State Institute of Sports in Krasnodar and turned professional in 1992. His greatest successes were victories at the French Open 1996 , the Australian Open 1999 and the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney . He was also number 1 in the world rankings for a short time and was also able to celebrate numerous successes in doubles. He was also a member of the victorious Russian Davis Cup team of 2002 , although he lost both his singles match against Sébastien Grosjean and the doubles with Marat Safin against Nicolas Escudé and Fabrice Santoro in the final. He was one of the players who had the most tournaments on the ATP Tour in a calendar year , where he holds some records. His strengths included direct points without the opponent making mistakes and being able to turn games that were believed to be lost. He had a very good success rate playing full five set games. Its weak point was a relatively high rate of involuntary errors.
Kafelnikow was repeatedly suspected of having been involved in match fixing, but such manipulation was never proven.
Since retiring from professional tennis, he has increasingly devoted himself to his passion for poker (he has already appeared in poker competitions on TV) and golf (however, in 2005 he clearly missed the cut in Moscow). In 2004, Yevgeny Kafelnikow reached the UK Poker Open , the highest-endowed poker tournament in the United Kingdom at the time, third place behind snooker player Matthew Stevens from Wales and darts player Phil Taylor . After winning the Russian Golf Championships in 2011 , he cherished the hope of qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
From 2008 Kafelnikow competed in tournaments as part of the ATP Champions Tour . In 2019 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame . Kafelnikow is divorced and has a daughter.
