Volkov turned pro in 1988 and took part in the Olympic Games for the Soviet Union in the same year . He became known at the latest in 1993 when he reached the semifinals of the US Open and knocked out Stefan Edberg , the then number one in men's tennis, on the way there . After reaching three finals in 1989 and 1990, Volkov won his first ATP tournament in Milan in 1991 . In 1991 he almost prevented Michael Stich from winning the tournament at Wimbledon . In the round of 16 he forced a trick to five sets and lost, after a 5: 3 lead, in the last round with 5: 7. He secured his second title in Auckland in 1993 . In 1993 he ended the comeback attempt of tennis legend Björn Borg in Moscow ; Borg never went on the men's tour again. In 1994 he won his third and last tournament as a professional tennis player at the Kremlin Cup . He reached his best world ranking position in August 1993 with place 14.
