Wright was one of the leading lawn tennis players of the time at the beginning of the century. Relatively early in his career, Wright won both gold medals in the 1904 Olympics . In the men's singles he defeated Robert LeRoy in the final . In doubles , he also won gold alongside Edgar Leonard when they again defeated LeRoy and Alphonzo Bell in the final. In 1901 he was in the final of the US National Championships for the first time . Two more times (1906 and 1908) he was only defeated in the final. In 1905 he won his only title in the US singles championships. In addition, he was with the American team in the final of the Davis Cup in the same year . From 1904 to 1906 he won the US doubles championships with Holcombe Ward . In 1910 he became the first American to reach the Wimbledon final. There he lost to the New Zealander Anthony Wilding . Wright was able to win the Canadian Open three times . In 1907, 1908 and 1911 Wright took part in the Davis Cup and twice they were only defeated in the final.
