George Whiteside Hillyard (born February 6, 1864 in Hanwell , Middlesex , † March 24, 1943 in Pulborough , Sussex ) was a British tennis player .

Life

Hillyard served in his youth in the Royal Navy and met the future King George V know. In 1887 he married Blanche Bingley , who won six women's singles at the Wimbledon Championships . In the same year he also started taking part in tennis tournaments. Several times he was able to reach the quarterfinals at the Wimbledon Championships (1889, 1897, 1901), but never got beyond. In the doubles competition he reached the final in 1889 and 1890 on the side of Ernest Lewis . At the Summer Olympics in London in 1908 , he and Reginald Doherty won the gold medal in the men's turf doubles.

During the First World War Hillyard served again in the navy and was promoted to frigate captain. From 1907 to 1924 he was general manager of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club .

Hillyard, who was also an avid golfer and cricketer , died in 1943 at the age of 79.
