Arthur William Charles Wentworth Gore (born January 2, 1868 in Lyndhurst , † December 1, 1928 in London ) was a British tennis player .
Life
Gore, who was born in Lyndhurst on the English Channel coast in 1868, learned to play tennis in the French seaside resort of Dinard . There he won his first title in a youth tournament at the age of 12.
From 1888 Gore took part in the tournament at Wimbledon , but was eliminated in the first four years in the first round. In 1900 he formed the British team in the first Davis Cup together with his doubles partner Herbert Roper Barrett and Ernest Black . In 1901, 1908 and 1909 he was able to win the tournament of Wimbledon in singles, in 1909 together with Roper Barrett also the doubles. He was 41 years and seven months old when he won in 1909, making him the oldest Wimbledon winner to date. In 1912, at the age of 44, he again reached the Challenge Round at Wimbledon, but lost it to Anthony Wilding in four sets.
Gore was also successful at the 1908 Olympic Games and won the gold medal in the indoor competition both in singles and in doubles with Herbert Roper Barrett.
Gore was President of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 1911 and 1912 . Until 1927 he took part in the Wimbledon Championships a total of 36 times, most recently at the age of 59, a record that has remained unbroken to this day.
In 1928 he was re-elected Vice President of the All England Club. He died on December 1 of the same year in the London borough of Kensington . In 2006 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
