Norman Brookes
Sir Norman Brookes , KBE (born November 14, 1877 in Melbourne , † September 28, 1968 there ) was an Australian tennis player .
His greatest successes were the three victories in the men's singles in 1907 and 1914 at Wimbledon and in 1911 the Australasian Championships . He was the first Wimbledon winner who was not British. The left-hander achieved his second victory after a seven-year absence from this tournament. He also won the US Open doubles with his compatriot Gerald Patterson in 1919 .
In Wimbledon he also reached the final in the singles in 1905 and 1919, where he was defeated by Laurence Doherty and Gerald Patterson .
Twenty-five times he competed in singles between 1905 and 1920 for Austraasia in the Davis Cup and made 18 games victorious; of fourteen doubles he won ten.
In 1938 he was knighted. Since 1911 he was married to the Australian writer Mabel Brookes . The couple had three daughters.
The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup , which is awarded to the winner of the men's singles of the Australian Open , is named after him.
