Hugh Laurence "Laurie" Doherty (born October 8, 1875 in London , † August 21, 1919 in Broadstairs , Kent ) was an English tennis player . He won two Olympic titles in 1900, the individual title of the Wimbledon Championships five times between 1902 and 1906 and the first non-American in 1903 to win the US Championships . With his older brother Reginald he formed the most successful doubles around the turn of the century in 1900.
Family and education
Laurence Doherty, who was also called "Little Do" as the three years younger brother of Reginald , was born in 1875 in Wimbledon, London . Like his brother, also visited Laurence the Westminster School and then studied at Trinity College of Cambridge University .
Athletic career
Doherty participated in tennis tournaments from 1893 to 1910. After losing to his brother Reginald in the final of the Wimbledon Championships in 1898 , he won there five times in a row from 1902 to 1906. His brother had previously triumphed from 1897 to 1900. In addition, in 1903 Laurie became the first non-American to win the US championships . With this victory he became the first tennis player to win both the Wimbledon Championships and the US Championships.
Together with his brother, he also won eight double titles at Wimbledon between 1897 and 1905. In 1902 and 1903, the two also won the US championships. In their weddings, the Dauherty brothers only lost five of their countless doubles matches.
At the Olympic Games in 1900 he won both singles and doubles with his brother. In mixed he took third place on the side of Marion Jones .
He played in the Davis Cup from 1902 to 1906 and won the title with the British team every year. Laurence did not lose a single one of his twelve singles and doubles matches.
Life after tennis
In 1903 he published the book RF and HL Doherty on Lawn Tennis with his brother . After a bad health condition prevented him from playing tennis in 1906, he began to play golf . He took part in several amateur tournaments and his best result was in 1908 at the Royal St. George’s when he was among the last 16. His handicap was +2.
In 1914 Doherty joined the Royal Navy Reserve. The sometimes harsh operating conditions worsened its already sensitive condition. He died in 1919 at the age of 43 after a long illness. In 1980 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame with his brother .
