Harold Segerson Mahony (born February 13, 1867 in Edinburgh , † June 27, 1905 at Dromore Castle , County Kerry ) was an Irish tennis player and Wimbledon winner in 1896.
Life
Mahony was born in 1867 as the only son of the barrister John Mahony. John Mahony was the sixth largest landowner in Ireland, including Dalmore Lodge in Leith , a district of Edinburgh, and Dromore Castle in County Kerry, Ireland.
Harold Mahony, an excellent tennis player, participated in the Wimbledon Championships from 1890 . After he had advanced to the final of the All-Comers competition in 1893 , he won his only Wimbledon title at the Wimbledon Championships in 1896 by defeating last year's winner Wilfred Baddeley in the Challenge Round . The final match ended with 6: 2, 6: 8, 5: 7, 8: 6, 6: 3 for Mahony and thus became the longest final match until 1954. The following year he had to admit defeat Reginald Doherty in the Challenge Round . In 1898 Mahony won the international German tennis championships by defeating Joshua Pim in the final. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 he won second place in both singles and mixed with the French Yvonne Prévost . In addition, he was subsequently awarded the bronze medal for third place in doubles - at the games there were initially only medals for the first two places.
At 1.91 m tall, Mahony had a long reach and, unlike most other players, had better back than forehand. He died in a bicycle accident on June 27, 1905, at the family estate of Dromore Castle, at the age of 38.
