The Irish Open ( Irish Craobh Oscailte na hÉireann ; Irish Championships until 1968 ) are an Irish men's tennis tournament that is held annually at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin .
The Irish Open has been held since 1879, making it the second oldest tennis tournament in the world after Wimbledon (1877). The Irish championships were one of the most important tournaments, especially in the first few decades. As early as 1879, in addition to the men's singles and doubles, a women singles and doubles tournament and a mixed competition were held there; At the Wimbledon Championships, men's doubles and women's singles were officially part of the tournament in 1884, and women's doubles and mixed only in 1913. Traditionally, the Irish Open takes place after the Wimbledon tournament.
Although the women's competition was part of the WTA Tour from 1971 to 1973 under the name Carroll's Irish Open , the tournament lost importance after the start of the Open Era . The men's tournament has been part of the ITF Future Tour since 2010 and pays out $ 25,000. A women's tournament is no longer taking place.
