Angela Mortimer

Florence Angela Margaret Mortimer Barrett (born April 21, 1932 in Plymouth ) is a former English tennis player .

Career

She had her first major success in 1955 when she won the French championships in women's singles and the doubles competition at Wimbledon. She won the Australian Championships in 1958 in singles and was in the same year against Althea Gibson in the final of Wimbledon , which she lost.

In 1961 she triumphed at Wimbledon when she won the final against her compatriot Christine Truman . Angela Mortimer's performance is all the more highly valued because she had to struggle with a large handicap. She was very hard of hearing and could not hear the ball bounce.

She has been married to sports journalist John Barrett since 1967 . In 1993, she was in the Hall of Fame of the tennis sport added.
