Shirley Fry Irvin (* the 30th June 1927 as Shirley Fry in Akron ) is a former American tennis player .

She won 17 Grand Slam titles in her career , 4 of which were singles. She achieved her 11 wins in doubles together with Doris Hart , another successful player in the 1950s. In 1956 she was number 1 in the women's world rankings. As one of the fastest players of her time, she was an opponent of the unforgettable Maureen Connolly and her friend Doris Hart. In 1957 she ended her career as a tennis player. In 1970 she was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame .

In badminton , she won the Mexico International in women's doubles with Peggy Vilbig in 1952 .

In February 1957 she married Karl Irvin.
