George Alan Thomas
Sir George Alan Thomas, 7th Baronet (born June 14, 1881 in Therapia near Istanbul , † July 23, 1972 in London ) was a British chess , badminton and tennis player who was successful in all three sports.
Nobility title
On March 9, 1918 he inherited from his relative Sir George Sidney Meade Thomas, 6th Baronet (1847-1918) the title of Baronet , of Yapton in the County of Sussex, created in 1766 in the Baronetage of Great Britain . Since Thomas remained unmarried and childless, the title expired on his death in 1972.
chess
He learned chess from 1894 from his mother, Lady Edith Thomas, who was a strong tennis player, but also won the world's first women's chess tournament in Hastings in 1895.
In 1896 Thomas won a simultaneous event against Emanuel Lasker . He was British Champion twice (1923 and 1934) and was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE in 1950 . With the English team he took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1927 , 1930 , 1931 , 1933 , 1935 , 1937 and 1939 . At the Chess Olympiad in 1927 he reached third place with the team and achieved the best individual result of all participants, in 1931 he achieved the second best individual result on the third board.
His best historical rating was 2610, which he achieved in January 1923.
tennis
In tennis , he competed in all men's singles at the Wimbledon Championships from 1906 to 1926 , from 1906 to 1922 he also competed in all men's doubles and from 1913 to 1926 a total of eight times in mixed. He achieved his best result in the individual in 1911 , when he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Charles Dixon after four sets in the quarterfinals . In doubles he reached the semi-finals in 1912 with his partner Albert Davis Prebble , in mixed he moved into the second round in 1920 and 1921 with his partner H. Hogarth.
badminton
As a badminton player , he won 21 titles in the All England (4 × singles, 9 × doubles, 8 × mixed), making him the most successful player at this event. In 1935 he was a co-founder of the world association IBF , of which he was chairman until 1956.
