BWF profile

Peter Høeg Gade , born in Peter Gade Christensen , (born December 14, 1976 in Aalborg , Nordjylland region , Denmark ) is a former Danish badminton player .

Career

Peter Gade is considered one of the most successful badminton players. In Denmark he is one of the most popular athletes. From 1997 to 2001, he led the world rankings in men's singles for a total of 146 weeks. His greatest successes include winning the All England 1999 , reaching the finals at the 2001 World Championships in Seville , four bronze medals at world championships and winning 31 major international tournaments in men's singles; including four times the Korea Open , three times the Danish / Denmark Open , twice the Malaysia Open , twice the Japan Open and ten times the Copenhagen Masters . In 1998 he was named World Badminton Player of the Year. He also won the European championship five times . He won the Danish championship ten times.

However, Gade never managed to become world champion or Olympic champion . At the 1999 World Championships in Copenhagen , he failed in the semifinals against Permadi Fung with 11:15, 15: 1, 14:15. In 2001 in Seville he made it to the finals, but lost to the Indonesian Hendrawan with 6:15, 16:17. At the 2005 World Championships in Anaheim , he failed in the semi-finals against world number one Lin Dan , who was defeated by Indonesian Taufik Hidayat in the final . At the 2010 World Championships in Paris and 2011 in London , he lost the semifinals against Chen Jin and Lin Dan in three sets. In total, Gade won five medals at world championships.

His participation in the Olympic Games was also not crowned with great success. In Sydney 2000 he failed in the semi-finals to Ji Xinpeng with 9:15, 15: 1, 9:15 and in the bronze medal to Xia Xuanze with 13:15, 5:15. In Athens 2004 , Beijing 2008 and London 2012 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Gade is known on the court for his fairness and fighting spirit. The latter also put him through a difficult period of rehabilitation after suffering a knee injury at the 2001 World Grand Prix Finals in Brunei . After two operations (2001 and 2002) and many setbacks, as well as lengthy breaks from training, he made the jump back into the top 10 in the world rankings in March 2003.

Gade ended his international playing career in October 2012 at the French Open . An official farewell game took place on December 27, 2012 at the Copenhagen Masters against Lin Dan , which he won with 20:22, 21:16, 21:14.

Private

Gade was married to the former Danish handball player Camilla Høeg until February 2012. Their daughters, Nanna and Alma, were born in 2004 and 2008.
