Swiss Open (badminton)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swiss Open are a high-level badminton tournament that has been held in Switzerland since 1955. At that time they were still referred to as the Swiss International Championships . The title fights have been called the Badminton Swiss Open since 1991 . The venue is currently the St. Jakobshalle in Basel . The tournament currently takes place every year in March.

history

From 1989 the organizers of the IMS had more and more problems in finding enough sponsors, funds and suitable halls - Switzerland threatened to lose the international event.

In 1990, the two badminton specialists Charles A. Keller (head of the competition department of the Swiss Badminton Association) and Christian Wackernagel (tournament organizer of the Winex Cup and sporting goods seller for the Winex company) took responsibility for the rights and obligations at the international championships from the association accepted.

Until 2006 a six-figure prize money could be distributed in several years, which helped the tournament to a four-star status in the World Badminton Grand Prix. From 2006 to 2010 the Wilson company acted as main and title sponsor.

From 2007 to 2010 the tournament was part of the BWF's newly launched Super Series , which includes the world's twelve most important badminton tournaments. This gave this event the second highest classification for world ranking points (5,500) and the prize money was increased from 120,000 to 200,000 US dollars. Only tournaments such as the Thomas Cup , the Uber Cup or the Sudirman Cup were ranked higher .

In 2011 the tournament was taken out of the Super Series by the BWF and is now held as a Grand Prix Gold. On March 20, 2011, the Swiss Open announced that the Japanese company Yonex will be the new main sponsor from 2012 for an initial five years .
