The Uber Cup is the team world championship in badminton for the women's national teams. In tennis , the comparable event would be the Fed Cup. The Uber Cup is one of the five 7 * category tournaments worldwide.
In 1950, the idea of holding a world championship for women’s national teams in badminton was first brought to the then IBF (International Badminton Federation) , today's Badminton World Federation (BWF) . For mostly financial reasons, this idea was not put into practice immediately, although at that time there was already a corresponding event for men, the Thomas Cup .
The tournament is named after the English national player Betty Uber , who initiated the competition and donated the trophy , and has been held since the 1956/1957 season.
Initially, the Uber Cup was played every 3 years. That changed in 1984. Since then, the Uber Cup has been held at the same time as the Thomas Cup. Since then, the Uber Cup has had the same mode as the Thomas Cup.
While the first three editions were won by the Americans, the winner's cup has only been passed back and forth in Asia since then. Since 1984 this event has been dominated by the participants from China , who were always in the finals and only came second in the successive editions of 1994 and 1996. In 2006 the winners did not lose a game over the entire tournament.
The trophy
The design of the winner's cup is from Betty Uber personally. The cup was made by the famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb from London . The 50 cm high cup is made of silver . A rotating globe is placed on the base, which is crowned by a badminton player standing on a shuttlecock.
On the base of the trophy are engraved the following words: "The Ladies' International Badminton Championships Challenge Trophy presented to the International Badminton Federation by Mrs HS Uber, 1956."
mode
In order to reach the finals of the Uber Cup, the national teams first had to compete against each other in regionally structured groups until the 2012 edition. In 2014, the final round participants were determined for the first time by world rankings. The best teams in these groups then fight for victory in the finals, similar to the Thomas Cup .
In the first 8 editions of the Uber Cup, 7 games were played per encounter. Then 9 games were played once. Since 1984, the 10th Cup, to this day only 5 games, 3 singles and 2 doubles, have been played. However, all games are only played in the group phase, from the quarter-finals onwards an encounter is over and one side has achieved 3 wins.
