Kunshan ( Chinese  昆山 市 , Pinyin Kūnshān Shì ) is an independent city that belongs to the administrative area of ​​the independent city ​​of Suzhou in the east Chinese province of Jiangsu . Kunshan has an area of ​​931 km² and about 787,000 inhabitants. For the end of 2004, 637,200 inhabitants were given.

Culture

One of the oldest types of opera , the Kunqu opera , originated in Kunshan . In 1992 a Kunqu Museum was built in the city center. The museum is stylistically a mixture of a pavilion and an ancient opera stage.

The Neolithic Chuodun site ( Chuodun yizhi绰 墩 遗址) - an important site for the knowledge of the history of wet rice cultivation - has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-76) since 2006 .

Kushan gained great cultural importance during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Famous personalities such as the writer Gui Youguang (1507–1571), the painter Gong Xian (1618–1689), the philologist Gu Yanwu (1613–1682), the teacher Zhu Bailu (1627–1698) came from this city.

Kunshan is also known as the birthplace of Song Qingling (1893–1981), wife of the state founder Sun Yat-sen and an important politician in China after World War II.

Geography and traffic

Kunshan is between 120 ° 48'21 "and 121 ° 09'04" east longitude and between 31 ° 06'34 "and 31 ° 32'36" north latitude. The city is about 60 km west of Shanghai. It is via an express train connection, which u. a. across the Danyang – Kunshan Great Bridge , connected to the Chinese capital.

The German city of Kehl is friends with Kunshan.
