In 2003, Saina Nehwal won the junior title in women's doubles with Aparna Balan in India. In 2007 she won the women's singles at the Philippine Open, which she has now specialized in. In 2008 she was successful at the Chinese Taipei Open and the Indian National Championships and finished fifth at the Olympics. She also won the women's singles discipline at the U19 World Championship held in Pune , India in 2008 . In 2009 she won the Indonesia Open and in 2010 she won bronze at the Asian Championships. In 2010 she also won the Commonwealth Games. In 2012 she won bronze at the Olympics and won the Denmark Open. In 2014 she won the Australian Open Superseries and finally became the first Indian woman to win the China Open Superseries Premier. She was also the first Indian woman to reach the final of the All England Open in March 2015 and won the Indian Open in New Delhi that same month. She was also the first Indian woman to reach number one in the world rankings.
In 2010 she was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna .
