Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is the highest Indian national award for athletes. The award is named after Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and is awarded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports ( Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports ). It consists of a medal, a certificate and a prize of 500,000 rupees. The award is presented by the Indian President.
The prize has been awarded since 1992 and honors the most outstanding achievement of an Indian or an Indian team in the field of sport (disciplines that are held at the Olympic Games , Asian Games or Commonwealth Games , as well as billiards , snooker and chess ) in April of the previous year by March of the award year. The winners are chosen by a selection committee set up by the ministry.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna takes precedence over the Arjuna Award , which is given annually for the best performance in certain disciplines, and can only be awarded to an athlete once.
