Vijender Kumar Singh ( Hindi : विजेंदर कुमार सिंह; born October 29, 1985 in the village of Kaluwas in the district of Bhiwani , Haryana ) is an Indian professional boxer in the super middleweight division . As an amateur he won at the 2008 Olympics, a bronze medal in the middleweight division .
Career
Vijender Kumar grew up as the son of a bus driver in his birthplace and came to boxing through a younger brother, which he initially only did playfully. After attending high school in Bhiwani , he came to the Bhiwani Sports Authority of India Center for Boxing and took a serious look at boxing with coach Jagdish Singh.
He quickly developed into an excellent technician who won several regional championships in the junior sector. Several training stays abroad followed, including in Cuba . Vijender Singh now works for the Haryani Police and works as a trainer in the Bhiwani Boxing Club .
In 2003 Vijender Kumar became Indian champion for the first time in the weight class up to 64 kg body weight (at that time light welterweight) with a victory over Harrinder Singh.
Continental championships
Vijender Kumar won the silver medal at the Afro-Asia Games in Hyderabad in 2003 and also the silver medal at the South Asian Games in Pakistan in 2004 . At his first Asian Championships in Vietnam in 2005 , he reached the quarterfinals of the welterweight division. He then boxed in the middleweight division.
In 2006 he won the South Asian Games in Sri Lanka and achieved a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Qatar when he was only stopped in the semifinals by Baqtiyar Artayev . In 2007 he started at the Asian Championships in Mongolia and reached the final against Wang Jianzheng and Suriya Prasathinphimai , where he lost to Elshod Rasulov . In March 2008 he also won the Asian Olympic qualification in Kazakhstan .
In 2009 he fought against Abbos Atoyev and Aedilbek Nijasymbetow a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in China, but was eliminated in the semifinals with 8:11 against Zhang Jianting. For this he won the gold medal at the Asian Games in China in 2010, where he again beat Abbos Atoyev in the final.
In 2012 he took third place in the Asian Olympic qualification in Kazakhstan.
Commonwealth Championships
Vijender Kumar is a gold medalist in the 2010 Commonwealth Championships, a silver medalist in the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games , and a bronze medalist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
World championships
At the 2005 World Championships in China, he beat Darius Jasevičius in his first fight, but then lost to Erislandy Lara . The 2007 World Championships in the USA were similar ; After beating Ronald Gavril , he was eliminated by Alfonso Blanco .
At the 2009 World Championships in Italy , he won a bronze medal after losing to Abbos Atoyev in the semi-finals , having previously beaten Serhiy Derevianchenko , among others . He lost to Emilio Correa in the first duel of the 2011 World Cup in Azerbaijan and was eliminated from Jason Quigley at the 2013 World Cup in Kazakhstan , after previously beating Hampus Henriksson.
Olympic games
At his first Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 , he failed in the first fight against Mustafa Karagöllü . In Beijing in 2008 , he became the first Indian boxer to win a medal after reaching the semi-finals against Badou Jack , Angkhan Chomphuphuang and Carlos Góngora, where he was eliminated from Emilio Correa with a bronze medal.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he beat Donabek Suzhanov and Terrell Gausha before failing in the quarter-finals to Abbos Atoyev.
Professional career
Vijender Kumar has been boxing as a professional since 2015. In July 2016 he defeated the former European champion Kerry Hope and became the WBO Asia-Pacific champion in the super middleweight division. After defending his title against Francis Cheka, he also became Oriental Champion of the WBO in August 2017 by beating Zulipikaer Maimaitiali. In December 2017, he defended both titles against Ernest Amuzu.
