Darren John Sutherland (born April 18, 1982 in Dublin , † September 14, 2009 in London ) was an Irish boxer . He won at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing , a bronze medal in the middleweight division.

Boxing career

Darren Sutherland started boxing as a teenager in Dublin. He was a member of St.Saviou's ABC Dublin (ABC = Amateur Boxing Club). At national championships, he made it to the podium for the first time in 2002 when he won a bronze medal in the light middleweight division. 2006, 2007 and 2008 he won each gold medal at the Irish Middleweight Championships, where he could defeat Edward Healy, Eamon O'Kane and Darren O'Neill in the finals.

In 2007 and 2008 he won the EU middleweight championships. He beat the German Stefan Härtel , among others, and won both times in the finals against the eventual Olympic champion James DeGale from England.

In April 2008 he won the European Olympic qualification tournament in Athens by beating Niko Jokinen, Glodi Eneste, Zoran Mitrović, Victor Cotiujanschi and Jean-Mickaël Raymond. He was qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . There he defeated Nabil Kassel from Algeria in the preliminary round and Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela in the quarterfinals , before he was eliminated in the semifinals against James DeGale with a bronze medal in the middleweight division.

In addition, Sutherland was a participant in the world championships in 2005 (wins against Badrakh Ganbold and Edwin Rodriguez, loss in the quarterfinals against Matwei Korobow ) and 2007 (wins against Roy Cooke and Andranik Hakobjan , loss in the second round against Alfonso Blanco).

From December 2008 to June 2009 he played four professional fights in Ireland and Great Britain, all of which he won early.

On September 14, 2009, Darren Sutherland was found hanged in his home. The police are not assuming any fault.

At the request of his family, an exhumation was carried out on September 1, 2010 and a second autopsy was performed by an independent pathologist . However, this came to the same result as the first autopsy. In the run-up to Darren Sutherland's death, there was evidence of depression .
