Alfonso Blanco (born February 2, 1986 in San Felipe , Yaracuy , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan boxer . He was runner-up in 2007 amateurs middleweight division.

Career

Alfonso Blanco started boxing as a teenager in Caracas . He developed very quickly and became Venezuelan champion both in the youth category and in all junior age groups (under 19, under 21). He is now 1.81 m tall and boxing middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight).

In 2004 he was accepted into the Venezuelan national team of amateur boxers and boxed in several international tournaments with good success in 2005. He finished second at the "Batalla de Carabobo" in Caracas in welterweight after victories over Carlos Negrón from Puerto Rico and his compatriot Albert Pirela and a defeat against world champion Erislandi Lara from Cuba (11:19). In 2005 he took part in the famous Cuban tournament "Giraldo Córdova Cardín" in Cienfuegos . He won there over Radu Zarif from Romania , but lost again to Erislandi Lara and came in third place.

In 2006 he completed the "Batalla de Carabobo" tournament after victories over Julio García from Puerto Rico, Alexander Brand from Colombia , Carlos Gongora from Ecuador and his compatriot Luis Gonzales as the middleweight tournament winner. He also celebrated a great success at the South American Games in Buenos Aires in 2006 . He won the middleweight boxing tournament there with victories over Alexander Brand, Ezequiel Madorna from Argentina and Carlos Gongora.

In 2007 Alfonso Blanco won again at the tournament "Batalla de Carabobo" in the middleweight division with victories over Ezequiel Maderna and Luis Enrique García from Cuba (22:18). Then he also won the qualifying tournament for the Pan American Games in Barquisimeto / Venezuela . There he defeated Marco Periban from Mexico (20:18), Shawn Porter from the United States (21:10) and Ezequiel Maderna (18: 5). At the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro he first won the middleweight division over Andrew Fermin from Trinidad and Tobago on points (8: 5), but had to accept a clear point defeat (6:20) in his next fight against Carlos Gongora and therefore proved only 5th place.

The high point of Alfonso Blanco's career so far was the world championship of amateur boxing in November 2007 in Chicago. He presented himself there in excellent form and defeated James DeGale from England (28:13), Vijender Kumar from India (13: 8) and Darren Sutherland from Ireland (20:13) on points. Three boxers who were set to cause a sensation at the 2008 Olympics, with DeGale winning Olympic gold that year , while Vijender Kumar and Darren Sutherland were to win bronze medals. In Chicago, Blanco won against Konstantin Buga from Germany (18: 9) and the 2004 Olympic welterweight champion Baqtijar Artajew from Kazakhstan (15: 7) on points. In the final he faced defending champion Matwei Korobow from Russia , against whom he had no chance and clearly lost on points (4:29). But winning the World Cup silver medal was a great success for Alfonso Blanco.

In 2008, Alfonso Blanco concentrated entirely on his start at the Olympic Games in Beijing . In Beijing he won the first round over Argenis Casimiro Núñez from the Dominican Republic, but lost in the quarterfinals against Darren Sutherland , whom he had defeated in Chicago, clearly on points (1:11) and narrowly missed a medal.

In June 2009 Blanco again won the Batalla de Carabobo tournament by beating the Olympic runner-up in Beijing, Cuban Emilio Correa , in the final .

At the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Milan, Blanco won a bronze medal. After victories over the Haitian Arnaud Sony junior, the Congolese Henry Biembe, the Serb Nikola Jovanovic and the Chinese Zhang Jianting, he lost his semi-final fight against the Armenian Andranik Hakobjan , who was defeated by the Uzbek Abbos Atoyev in the final .

Alfonso Blanco has been a professional boxer since September 2010. He has played six fights so far (July 2011), all of which have won.
