Matwei Georgijewitsch Korobow ( Russian Матвей Георгиевич Коробов ; born January 7, 1983 in Orotukan , Magadan Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a Russian professional boxer. He became world middleweight champion among amateurs in 2005 and 2007.

Amateur career

South African Korobov started boxing in 1991 at the age of eight. In 1999 he won the welterweight title at the European Cadet Championships (U-17) in Baku . In 2001 he was in Sarajevo junior European light middleweight champion and 2002 and 2003 military world champion. He was denied participation in the 2004 Olympic Games , however, as the more experienced Gaidarbek Gaidarbekow was preferred to him.

In 2005 Korobow took part in the World Amateur Championships in Mianyang (China) and won the middleweight title. He defeated Dschachan Kurbanow from Tajikistan, Jarrod Fletcher from Australia and Darren Sutherland early, only in the semifinals did he have to go the full distance against the Cuban Emilio Correa in order to qualify for the final with 49 to 25 points. There he reached a twenty point lead against Ismail Sillach from the Ukraine in the second round and became the sovereign world champion through RSC-OS cancellation (cancellation by the referee due to excessive superiority).

In 2006 Korobow was also European champion in Plovdiv , where he beat Donatas Bondorovas from Lithuania, Sebastian Rzadkiewicz from Poland and Savaş Kaya from Turkey on points 38:14. In the semifinals he defeated the Ukrainian Oleksandr Ussyk by breaking off in the third round and in the final Rahib Bəylərov (Azerbaijan) with 37 to 16 points.

At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago , Korobow finally defended his title confidently with victories against Francy Ntetu from Canada (third round canceled), Hamyoun Amiri from Iran (third round canceled), Carlos Góngora from Ecuador (third round canceled), Wang Jianzheng from China ( 22: 3), Serhij Derewjantschenko from Ukraine (second round canceled) and Alfonso Blanco from Venezuela (29: 4).

The world championships also served as qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, in which Matwei Korobow, the reigning world champion, was the clear favorite for the gold medal in the middleweight division. He also won his first fight against Sweden's Naim Terbunja on points (18: 6). In the round of 16 he suffered a point defeat (7:10) against the 2004 welterweight Olympic champion Baqtijar Artajew from Kazakhstan , which meant he was eliminated early and only finished in a disappointing ninth place.

Professional career

After the Olympic Games, he signed a professional contract with Bob Arum's promotion company Top Rank in the USA , where his parents and brother have lived since 1998. He played his first fight on November 1, 2008.

After 6 years and 24 consecutive fights, he was allowed to box for a world title for the first time on December 13, 2014. However, he lost the fight against Andy Lee for the vacant WBO world middleweight title through tKo in the 6th round.
