Emilio Correa Bayeux
Emilio Correa Bayeux (born October 12, 1985 ) is a Cuban boxer . He is the winner of the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , a bronze medal at the World Amateurs Championship in 2005 and the winner of the 2007 Pan American Games, both in the middleweight division.
Career
Emilio Correa Bayeux grew up in Havana . As the son of the 1972 Munich welterweight Olympic champion Emilio Correa Vaillant , the path to boxing was practically given to him. His father was also his first coach. Emilio Correa is now training in the performance center of the Cuban Boxing Association in Havana. In 2003 he already showed his great talent. He won that year a. a. the Copa Roberto Balado , named after the former Cuban Olympic champion and multiple world champion Roberto Balado . In the final of the welterweight division, he defeated Erislandi Lara on points.
As a Cuban junior champion in 2004, he started in the same year at the junior world championship in Jeju / South Korea in the welterweight division. After four wins he was there in the final battle against the Uzbek Elshod Rasulow and was defeated by this by breaking off in the 2nd round. He became vice world champion . In the same year he was also at the Cuban senior championship at the start, but lost in the semifinals against Erislandi Lara and took 3rd place.
At the beginning of 2005 he won his first Cuban championship title among the seniors. He had meanwhile moved up to the middleweight division. In the final he defeated it Yudiel Nápoles on points. After the Cuban championships, Emilio Correa won two strong international tournaments. In Ústí nad Labem he won the final over Alexei Shcherbakov from Russia on points (17:14) and in the final of the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana he defeated his compatriot Yordanis Despaigne on points. He then started at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) and was surprisingly defeated there in the semifinals by the young German Eduard Gutknecht in the 2nd round by breaking off. Emilio Correa then won his first international title in Teresópolis, Brazil . He was Pan American middleweight champion with wins over Andrew Fermin, Trinidad , Marco Periban , Mexico and Carlos Negrón from Puerto Rico . At the following World Cup for amateurs in Mianyang in China , Emilio Correa won on points over Adonis Stevenson from Canada (34:20), then became the demolition winner over Andras Nagy from Hungary , won over Qi Jing from China on points (30:12), won over Andranik Hakobjan from Armenia by breaking off in the 3rd round and was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual world champion Matwei Korobow from Russia on points (25:49). By reaching the semi-finals, he won a World Cup bronze medal.
Emilio Correa had to experience how strong the Cuban competition is in 2006, because he could not defend his Cuban championship title. In the final he lost to Yordanis Despaigne on points. For this he was able to keep himself harmless at the so-called 3rd Cuban Olympiad in Havana, a well-attended international tournament. He won there in the middleweight division with a point win (12: 5) in the final over William Ordiz from Cuba. At the World Cup 2006 in Baku , a tournament of the best national teams in the world, Emilio Correa won over Ruslan Safjulin from Kazakhstan and Demetrius Andrade from the United States on points, but was again defeated by the world champion Matwei Korobow from Russia quite clearly on points (9: 22).
The year 2007 began with a success for Emilio Correa. He was the second time Cuban middleweight champion with a point win over Yudiel Napoles. Then he won again at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament , where he defeated three top Cuban boxers with Yordanis Despaigne, Julio Iglesias and Luis Enrique García. Emilio Correa then experienced a surprise at the qualifying tournament for the Pan-American Games in Buenos Aires , where he lost in the semifinals against Marco Periban from Mexico with a tie of 30:30 due to the total number of goals, but with his 3rd place for the Pan American Games could qualify. At the Pan American Games themselves, which took place in Rio de Janeiro , Emilio Correa was in top form. There he defeated Shanon Porter from the United States by knockout in the 2nd round and then won over Marco Periban (34:10), Carlos Gongora from Ecuador (21:13) and Argenis Núñez from Dom. Rep. (22: 5) each clearly on points and was thus the winner of the 2007 Pan-American Middleweight Games.
The year 2007 was not over yet. At first, a bitter disappointment awaited him, because he could not start at the sporting highlight of the year, the 2007 World Cup in Chicago . The reason was that the Cuban sports leadership, probably at the behest of the state leadership, canceled participation in this world championship for security reasons. The real reason was probably that at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro the world champions Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara had separated from the Cuban team and wanted to travel to Germany , where they wanted to become professional boxers. Under pressure from the Cuban government, however, both boxers were arrested by the Brazilian police on the flimsy reason that their visas had expired and were being transported back to Cuba. Erislandi Lara has now managed to escape from Cuba to Germany in another attempt. As a punishment for the behavior of their teammates, the boxers of the Cuban team were then not allowed to compete at the World Championships in Chicago. The so-called safety reasons were only an excuse, because Cuban boxers often started in competitions in the United States without ever having any safety problems. In reality, it was probably the Cuban government's fear that more Cuban boxers would flee in Chicago.
Emilio Correa was able to qualify for participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in Port of Spain in Trinidad . He won the middleweight tournament there with victories over Yamaguchi Falcão from Brazil , Ezequiel Maderna, Argentina , Clarence Johnson, VIS and Carlos Gongora. At the team tournament of the Cuban performance centers, Emilio Correa then defeated the entire Cuban middleweight elite at the end of the eventful year 2007. He beat Arisnoide Despaigne, Carlos Medina, Raudel Acosta, Yudiel Nápoles and José Chapotín.
At the Cuban Championships in 2008 Emilio Correa won his third title. In the final he outclassed Arisnoide Despaigne with 18: 1 hits. He then won the so-called Strandja tournament in Plovdiv with victories over Georgios Gazis, Greece , Savas Kaya, Turkey , James Degale from England and Mladen Manew, Bulgaria . At the weakly occupied Pan-American Championship in Cuenca / Ecuador he won over Samuel Rogers, VIS and Yamaguchi Falcão and thus the tournament.
At the Olympic Games in Beijing in August 2008, he won against Jarrod Fletcher , Australia (17: 4), Serhij Derewjantschenko , Ukraine (18: 4), Elshod Rasulow, Uzbekistan (9: 7) and Vijender Kumar , India (8: 5) ) on points and was in the final against James DeGale from England, against whom he, not without controversy, lost on points (14:16) and thus won the silver medal.
In October 2008 he had an operation on his hitting hand (the right hand), which he had already started during the Olympic tournament. In his first international appearance, the Batalla de Carabobo tournament in Venezuela in June 2009, he lost to the Venezuelan Alfonso Blanco (2: 3) in the final battle .
At the World Championships in Milan in September 2009 , he was unable to take part due to the injury he had not yet completely overcome. His place in the Cuban relay was taken over by youth world champion Rey Eduardo Recio . In the same year, however, he was able to win the Pan American Games.
At the beginning of 2010, Correa played several selection competitions, all of which he won and thus fought back for number one in the Cuban middleweight division. At the Pan American Championships in the same year, however, he was eliminated in the semifinals.
In 2011 Correa won the Pan American Games, but had to admit defeat at the World Championships in the round of 16 to Bogdan Juratoni , Romania (26:24). Later that year he lost to Ramon Luis in the final of the Cuban Championships. At the American Olympic qualification tournament the following year, Correa lost in the round of 16 against Junior Castillo, Dominican Republic (DQ 1st), and thus missed the qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
