Adonis Stevenson (born September 22, 1977 in Port-au-Prince ) is a Canadian professional boxer of Haitian origin and former world champion of the WBC in the light heavyweight division.

Amateur career

Adonis Stevenson won 33 of 38 amateur fights. He was Canadian Middleweight Champion in 2005 and 2006 and was also voted Canada's Boxer of the Year in those two years.

At the 13th World Championships in 2005 in Mianyang , China , he was defeated by Cuban Emilio Correa 20:37 on points. At the 18th Commonwealth Games in 2006 in Melbourne , Australia , he only lost in the final against Jarrod Fletcher , thus winning the silver medal and becoming Canada's only medalist at the Games.

Professional career

In September 2006 he played his first professional fight; he defeated Mike Funk by first round-K. o., whereupon Funk ended his boxing career. By December 2007, he won nine fights in a row, seven of which by knockout. He defeated, among others, Marcus Thomas (10-1) from Barbados , the still undefeated Eduardo Calderón (3-0) and the American Etianne Whitaker, who already had world champions like William Joppy and Károly Balzsay in front of his fists. He achieved all of these three wins by knockout in the first round.

On December 7, 2007 he was in Montreal by a points victory against David Whittom, Canadian super middleweight champion. In his next fight on April 5, 2008 in Montreal, he defeated Dhafir Smith by tKo in the fifth round and thus received the American-Continental Championship of the WBC . He defended this almost four months later with a knockout in the first round against Anthony Bonsante (31-9). On September 25, 2009 he won by tKo in the fifth round against Jermain Mackey (18-3), the international championship of the WBC.

He finally had to accept his first defeat as a professional in April 2010 against Darnell Boone (16-15), who was intended as a build-up opponent , when he lost to tKo in the second round. It was his first professional fight outside of Canada and his first fight under his new promoter Lou DiBella .

He then did not fight for almost a year and only got back into the ring on April 8, 2011. He beat Derek Edwards (25-1) in the third round knockout and won the North American championship title of NABA . In his next duel in September 2011 in Las Vegas , he won against Shujaa El-Amin (11-1) by tKo in the first round.

On December 10, 2011 he defeated Aaron Pryor junior (16-4) by tKo in round 9, thus defending his NABA title and also receiving the NABO North American championship . On February 18, 2012 he won by knockout in the first round against Jesús González (27-1), the intercontinental championship of the IBF .

On April 20, 2012 he also secured the silver title of the WBC with a tKo victory in the second round against Noé González Alcoba (28-1, only defeat against Felix Sturm ). In March 2013 he defeated Darnell Boone, against whom he had to accept his only defeat so far, by knockout in the sixth round.

On June 8, 2013, he won the WBC World Light Heavyweight Championship with a knockout win in the first round against Chad Dawson (31-2). He defended his title for the first time at the end of September 2013 against Tavoris Cloud (24-1) and won by giving up his opponent after the seventh round. On November 30, 2013, he defended his title through tKo in the sixth round against Tony Bellew (20-1).

On May 24, 2014, he was able to defeat Poland's Andrzej Fonfara (25-2) unanimously on points in another title defense . He also had his opponent on the ground twice. In December 2014 he also defeated the Russian Dmitri Suckotski (22-2) by knockout in the fifth round.

On April 4, 2015, he defeated Sakio Bika (32-6) unanimously on points. He defeated Tommy Karpency (25-4) in September 2015 in the third round. In July 2016, he beat Thomas Williams (20-1) by knockout in the fourth round.

In his eighth title defense on June 3, 2017, he again defeated Andrzej Fonfara (29-4) with a technical knockout in the second round. In his ninth title defense on May 19, 2018, he scored a draw against Badou Jack (22-1).

On December 1, 2018 he lost the title to Ukrainian Oleksandr Hwosdyk (15-0) after a knockout defeat in the eleventh round .
