Carl Olson (born July 11, 1928 in Honolulu , Hawaii , USA as Carl Elmer Olson , † January 16, 2002 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA ) was an American boxer and world middleweight champion .

Career

Olson won his first 21 fights, most of them prematurely. On October 21, 1953 he boxed against Randolph Turpin for the vacant world title and beat him over 15 rounds by unanimous decision. He defended this belt several times, including the following year against the Cuban Kid Gavilán by majority vote.

On December 12, 1955, his compatriot Sugar Ray Robinson took the world title from him with a classic knockout in round 2. Even the rematch, which took place in May of the following year, Olson lost to a classic knockout, this time in round 4.

He was named Boxer of the Year in 1954 by the renowned Ring Magazine and in 1955 by the BWAA .

In 2000, Olson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
