Carlos Ortiz (born September 9, 1936 in Ponce ) is a former Puerto Rican boxer who was world champion in the light and light weight. He is not related to Manuel Ortiz .

Career

When his family moved to New York as a child, he was drawn into many street fights. That got him into boxing and he started training at the Madison Square Boys Club .

He turned pro in 1955 at the age of 18 and won his first 20 fights. He won the vacant light welterweight championship on June 12, 1959 in a revenge against Kenny Lane (KO2). Since the title was not particularly respected at the time - the light welterweight division was not one of the original weight classes and there had been no fighting for the crown for 13 years - it hardly aroused any interest. Nevertheless, with this title win he only became the second Puerto Rican world champion after Sixto Escobar. He beat Battling Torres KO and defeated the Italian Duilio Loi on points in the USA before he was controversial in his homeland on September 1, 1960 and had to give up his title. After he lost the third duel in 1961, he boiled off and went down to lightweight.

On April 21, 1962 he beat Joe Brown here in the fight for the WBA title. With the premature victory over Douglas Vaillant on April 7, 1963, he also added the WBC title. In the following years he defended against the Filipino southpaw Flash Elorde and Kenny Lane before he lost his title to Ismael Laguna in 1965 . But he won the direct rematch and then successfully defended against Laguna, Johnny Bizzarro, Elorde and the Cuban Sugar Ramos. Against Nicolino Locche he reached a draw. He finally lost the title on June 29, 1968 to the Dominican Carlos Teo Cruz. This crashed on the way to a rematch with the plane. Ortiz then temporarily ended his career. In 1971 he started a comeback, but after the only knockout defeat his career finally resigned in September 1972 against Ken Buchanan.

In 1991 Ortiz was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
