Howard Davis (born February 14, 1956 in New York City - December 30, 2015 ) was an American boxer.
amateur
Davis was a formidable amateur and was trained by his father, an ex-boxer. In 1973 he was US featherweight champion and 1974 world champion in Havana . In 1976 he was US lightweight champion and qualified, including with a victory over Aaron Pryor , for participation in the Olympic Games in Montreal . There he won the gold medal in his weight class and was awarded the Val Barker Cup as the technically best boxer of the tournament, ahead of other well-known boxers such as Sugar Ray Leonard and the Spinks brothers.
professional
In 1977 he turned professional, but had comparatively little success, which was due to his poor taker skills and lack of clout. He was defeated on June 7, 1980 by the Scottish southpaw Jim Watt in the fight for the WBC title just on points, in 1986 just as tightly to Edwin Rosario ( WBA title), against whom he had led until a knockdown in the last round. In the same year he surprisingly lost to the unknown Joe Manley.
Against Meldrick Taylor , also Olympic champion, he boxed a draw in 1986 and against Hector Camacho he lost on points in 1987. On July 31, 1988, he got a third chance against IBF title holder Buddy McGirt , but could not use it again and was knocked out in the first round. Then he ended his career. A comeback in the 1990s was unsuccessful. After his boxing career he worked as a martial arts trainer .
Davis died at the end of December 2015 at the age of 59 after a brief illness - as a lifelong non-smoker - of complications from bronchial carcinoma .
