Andreas Zulow

Andreas Zülow (born October 23, 1965 in Ludwigslust ) is a former German amateur boxer.
Zülow started boxing at the age of nine. He won seven national championship titles in his career: 1984 to 1986 he was GDR champion in featherweight, 1987 to 1989 in lightweight, in 1992 he also won the German championship in light welterweight.
At the 1986 World Championships in Reno , he finished third, at the 1989 World Cup in Moscow , he was second. He won in the semifinals against Kostya Tszyu (USSR), but lost the final against the Cuban Julio Gonzalez. 1991 in Sydney he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Peter Richardson .
He took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul for the GDR and won the gold medal there. He beat Tszyu again on the way to victory in the quarterfinals. At the 1992 games in Barcelona he lost to the eventual winner Héctor Vinent from Cuba in the second round of the tournament .
His participation in European championships was less successful: in 1985 in Budapest he did not get beyond the second round and in 1987 in Turin he even lost in the first fight. In 1991 in Gothenburg he reached the final. There he met Tszyu again, but was inferior to him this time and thus took second place.
Zülow completed 322 fights as an amateur with 273 wins (1 KO ). In the mid-1990s he received an offer from Universum Box-Promotion for a professional contract, but turned it down for reasons of age and lack of motivation and finally ended his career in 1995. Andreas Zülow has a daughter and runs a boxing and kickboxing studio in Gadebusch .
For the Olympic victory in 1988 in Seoul, Zülow was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.
