Józef Grudzień (born April 1, 1939 in Piasek Wielki near Busko-Zdrój ; † June 17, 2017 ) was a Polish boxer . He became an Olympic lightweight champion in 1964 .

Career

Józef Grudzień started boxing as a teenager in 1952. After joining the Polish People's Army , he became a member of Legia Warsaw . His coach there was Stanisław Wasilewski.

He first drew attention to himself in 1960 when he reached the final against Kazimierz Paździor at the Polish championship in the seniors and was only slightly defeated on points. Paździor was after all in the same year in Rome Olympic champion in the lightweight.

In 1961 and 1962 he did not appear. But after he convinced in some international matches in 1963, he was nominated by state coach Feliks Stamm for the European championship of that year in Moscow . He won there in the lightweight against the Englishman Benny O'Sullivan, but lost in the quarter-finals to János Kajdi from Hungary and was eliminated without winning a medal. In the same year he won the 4th Championship of the Armies of the States of the Warsaw Pact (SKDA Championship) in Łódź in the lightweight final over Yan Yu Ok from North Korea on points.

In 1964 he started for Poland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo . He was in excellent shape there and won successively over Tauno Halonen from Finland , Alex Oundo from Kenya , Stojan Pilichew from Bulgaria and in the semifinals over Ronald Harris from the United States on points. So he had reached the final against the Soviet athlete Wilikton Barannikow . In this final he clearly won 5-0 judges' votes and thus became Olympic champion .

At the European Championships in Berlin (East) in 1965 , Józef Grudzień did not succeed in becoming European champion . After three wins he met Wilikton Barannikow again in the final; this time won on points. Józef Grudzień had to be satisfied with the runner-up European title.

In 1966 there were no international championships. At the 5th SKDA championship in Budapest he won again in the lightweight. He beat the strong Hungarian Laszlo Gula on points in the final . In 1967, Józef Grudzień also succeeded in becoming European champion in Rome . It took him five wins. He beat Piet Doorenbusch from the Netherlands, Kari Meronen from Finland, Enzo Petriglia from Italy, Laszlo Gula and in the final Zvonimir Vujin from Yugoslavia on points.

Józef Grudzień also fought his way through to the finals at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , winning over Ho She Yun, Taipei , Roberto Caminero, Cuba , Anthony Quinn, Ireland , Enzo Petriglia and Zvonimir Vujin. In this he met Ronald Harris, whom he had defeated four years ago in Tokyo in the semi-finals. Ronald Harris took revenge in Mexico City. He retained the upper hand over Józef Grudzień on points and referred him to the silver place.

Józef Grudzień started after his second place in the Polish championships in 1960 only again in these championships in 1965. He won the final that year over Antoni Dasal on points. He was also Polish lightweight champion in 1967 and 1968.

In international matches, Józef Grudzień represented the Polish colors twenty-two times. He celebrated 18 victories. He boxed six times against German opponents and was victorious five times. Only Wolfgang Schmidt from Mainz managed a draw against Józef Grudzień in 1964.

Józef Grudzień was an officer in the Polish army. After leaving the army, he worked as a designer for a Warsaw company.
