The Dundee Hills (recognized since 2004) is a wine-growing region in the US state of Oregon , where the first wines were grown in the mid- 1960s . The Protected Designation of Origin ( American Viticultural Area ) is part of the parent Willamette Valley AVA and is located southwest of Portland near the township of Dundee in the administrative area of Yamhill County in northwest Oregon. The range of hills stretches along a north-south oriented line on the western valley side of the Willamette River , which is shielded from heavy rains and storms by the Coast Range . The Dundee Hills are also known as Red Hills because of their red soil , the soil is rich in iron.
