Radiation planning

In the context of radiation therapy, radiation planning is understood as the development of an individual plan to contain the tumor and at the same time protect healthy tissue.

The planning is usually based on a computer-aided planning system and on previously made CT images of the patient.

In Germany, a so-called "medical physics expert" is responsible for radiation planning in accordance with the Radiation Protection Ordinance or the X-ray Ordinance . In order not to exceed the tolerance limits of the organs , partial doses are applied from different angles using the multi-field technique (also called isocentric radiation ).

The aim of radiation planning is to limit the tumor with a relative dose (usually 95%) and to protect the healthy tissue as best as possible using aids such as the multi-field technique.
