Tolerance dose

In radiation therapy, the tolerance dose (dose tolerata) represents a dose that should not be exceeded for a tissue, organ or body , because otherwise irreparable damage is to be expected. Only deterministic radiation damage is taken into account here, and not stochastic late radiation effects .

The tolerance doses are defined in the relevant legal provisions or through recognized recommendations. In radiology , for example, the minimum and maximum tolerance dose is defined for organs at risk :

  • The minimum tolerance dose , abbreviated to TD 5/5 , describes the dose which, under standard treatment conditions, does not cause complications of more than 5% within 5 years after treatment in a collective of patients.
  • The maximum tolerance dose or TD 50/5 is accordingly the dose that leads to a maximum of 50% serious complications within 5 years.

The tolerance doses of the organs are in the order of about 15 Gy in 4 weeks in the eye and 40 Gy in 4 weeks in the spinal cord .
