Willamette Valley AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Oregon . Modern viticulture begins there around the mid-1960s, and it was recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1984. Among other grape varieties, Pinot noir , Pinot gris , Chardonnay , Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are mainly grown .

location

The area spans the entire Willamette Valley that surrounds the Willamette River in the northeast of the state. It extends from Columbia in the north to just before Eugene in the south, where the valley ends. The valley is bordered by the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Oregon Coast Range to the west. The Willamette Valley is the largest growing area in the state at 13,500 square kilometers, and most of the Oregon-based wineries are located in this area. In 2006 this was around 200 goods.

climate

The valley's climate is mild all year round, the winters are mostly cold and humid, while the summer months are usually warm and dry. Temperatures above 32 ° C are only to be expected on 5 to 15 days, only every 25 years the temperature in this area falls below −18 ° C. Most rainfalls are limited to the coldest seasons, late autumn, winter and early spring. With snow depths between 13 and 25 centimeters per year, relatively little snow falls.

Subzones

Not all areas of the valley are suitable for viticulture, the focus is west of the river, at the tributaries of the Willamette. By far the densest concentration of wineries is found in Yamhill County .

Within the northern part of the Willamette Valley AVA, since it was recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 1984, other subordinate growing areas have been registered: Chehalem Mountains AVA , Dundee Hills AVA , Eola-Amity Hills AVA , Laurelwood District AVA, McMinnville AVA , Ribbon Ridge AVA , Tualatin Hills AVA and Yamhill-Carlton District AVA .
