The McMinnville AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Oregon . Modern viticulture began in this area around the mid-1960s, and it was recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2005. Among other grape varieties , the early-ripening Pinot gris and Riesling are mainly grown . The protected designation of origin was founded at the instigation of winemaker Kevin Byrd from the Youngberg Hill winery .

location

The area extends within the Willamette Valley in the northeast of the state.

The recognized vineyards of the McMinnville AVA growing area are spread across the administrative area of Yamhill County between the cities of McMinnville and Sheridan . The unique selling point of the region in relation to the Willamette Valley AVA is the barren soil and its altitude between 60 and 305 m.

climate

The valley's climate is mild all year round, the winters are mostly cold and humid, while the summer months are usually warm and dry. Temperatures above 32 ° C are only to be expected on 5 to 15 days, the temperature in this area only drops below 0 ° C every 25 years. Most rainfalls are limited to the coldest seasons, late autumn, winter and early spring. With snow depths between 13 and 25 centimeters per year, relatively little snow falls.

Cool sea air can reach the wine-growing region at any time via the Van Duzer Corridor , which is only 30 kilometers away , so that the predominantly white grape varieties retain a sufficiently high acidity. This effect on the wine is supported by the slightly higher position of the area compared to the surrounding area.
