Héctor Vinent Carón (born July 25, 1972 in Alto Songo ) is a former Cuban boxer.

career

Southpaw Vinent dominated the amateurs light welterweight division in the 1990s. His first international success was in 1989, third place in the lightweight at the Junior World Championship in Bayamón . The following year he was then in Lima junior world champion light welterweight.

At the age of 20, Vinent won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , where he struck a 1988 Olympic champion with the German Andreas Zülow . In 1993, he was also able to prevail at the amateur world championships in Tampere , where he hit the Way to the title among other things Oktay Urkal (12: 7 on points) and prevailed in the final against the Finn Jyri Kjäll (7: 1 on points). At the World Cup in Bangkok in 1994, however, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a narrow point defeat (15:16) against Urkal. At the Goodwill Games held in Saint Petersburg in the same year, he succeeded in another tournament success.

In 1995 he defended his title at the World Championships in Berlin and also in 1996 he won Olympic gold again at the Olympic Games in Atlanta with the final victory over Oktay Urkal.

In addition, Vinent was Cuban champion six times between 1992 and 1998, and in 1996 he won the Chemistry Cup in Halle . Other well-known boxers, who he was able to beat several times during his career, were among others Nurhan Süleymanoğlu , Oleg Saitow , Hocine Soltani , Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas .

After the Olympic Games, Vinent was no longer used in any international championships in western countries. After his friend Joel Casamayor fled to the USA in 1996, the Cuban government feared another prominent refugee. In addition, he was no longer allowed to train with the national team. In 1998, an eye injury put Venten's career to an end. Today he trains teenagers at the Rafael Trejo Gym in Havana .
