Bohumil Němeček

Bohumil Němeček (born January 2, 1938 in Tábor , Czechoslovakia , † May 2, 2010 in Ústí nad Labem , Czech Republic ) was a Czechoslovak boxer .

biography

Němeček represented Czechoslovakia at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome in the boxing competitions and was Olympic light welterweight champion in the final match against Clement Quartey from Ghana . With his silver medal, Quartey won the first medal at the Olympic Games for the African continent . Němeček from the ČSSR had beaten the American Quincey Daniels 5-0 in the semifinals . Technically, Němeček was clearly superior in the final. Quartey you could tell that he had little international experience and so the result was clear with 5-0 for Němeček.

In the fights for the title of European amateurs light welterweight title, he lost to Richardas Tamulis in the semi-finals in 1962 .

In 1967, however, he became European champion and was able to prevail in the final against Manfred Wolke , the GDR light middleweight champion.

On May 2, 2010 he died in Ústí nad Labem after a long illness
