"Sugar" Ray Seales (born April 9, 1952 in Saint Croix , US Virgin Islands ) is a former American boxer.

amateur

The tall southpaw Seales was an outstanding amateur and won the US light welterweight championship in 1971 and the National Golden Gloves in 1972, before becoming the only American to win a gold medal at the Munich Olympics in 1972 . His record was 338-12.

professional

In 1973 he started his professional career. He won his first 21 fights before losing to Marvin Hagler on points in August 1974 in his hometown of Boston . In a second duel, the two tied three months later, the third encounter in 1979 Hagler won with a first-round knockout, immediately before Seales had also lost to Ayub Kalule . In other matches of the 70s he was defeated by the tough puncher Eugene "Cyclone" Hart on points and the Englishman Alan Minter by knockout.

After the knockout loss against Hagler, he never became world class and did not fight for a world title in his career. At the end of his career he got major eye problems, which he did not have treatment, and therefore later became almost completely blind.
