Ayub Kalule (born January 6, 1954 in Kampala ) is a former Ugandan boxer living in Denmark .

amateur

South African Kalule won the lightweight British Commonwealth Games in 1974 in Christchurch and the light welterweight the African Championship in Kampala and the Amateur World Championship in Havana .

professional

Kalule turned pro in Denmark in 1976. In 1979 he beat the Olympic champion Ray Seales . On October 24, 1979, he won the WBA semi-middleweight title in Japan by winning a point over fifteen rounds against Masashi Kudo. After five title defenses, he was challenged in June 1981 by Sugar Ray Leonard in the United States. The fight was initially even, but then it went hard in the ninth round.

In an attempt to regain the WBA title, he lost again prematurely in July 1982 to Davey Moore. He also lost to TKO in a build-up fight against future star Mike McCallum .

In 1984 he beat Lindell Holmes and became European champion in 1985. He defended the European title in Italy against Sumbu Kalambay on points. Both boxers were down in the fight. In the second defense of the title, he lost prematurely to Herol Graham and then ended his career.
